Belize/bəˈli¢°z/ (formerly British Honduras) is a country located on the north eastern coast of Central America and it is the only country in the area where English is the official language, although Kriol and Spanish are more commonly spoken. Belize is bordered to the north by Mexico, south and west by Guatamela, and to the east by the Caribbean Sea. Its mainland is about 290 kilometers (180 mi) long and 110 kilometres (68 mi) wide.
It is a 2 hour flight from Houston or Miami. Continental, American, Delta, and US airways fly into Belize International Airport daily.
Placencia Peninsula is located on the south mainland of Belize.
Maya Island Air (www.mayaislandair.com) and Tropic air have flights into the Placencia airstrip almost hourly during daylight hours from Belize International Airport. Alternatively, you can rent a vehicle in Belize City (right at the International Airport), and make the 3 hour drive to Placencia.
The major highways are paved and in excellent shape, though there are some sharp turns and single lane bridges as you go through the mountains. You must drive into Belize City from the airport, go west on the Western Highway from Belize City to the turn off to Belmopan; take this left turn (south) which puts you on the Hummingbird highway through the Mayan Mountains. Just before Dangriga, you will turn south (right) on the Southern Highway.
In about 30 minutes you will make a left turn (well marked) onto the highway towards Placencia. This road is recently paved and in great shape. From there you keep going until you reach a curved right turn followed by an imbedded multi-speed bump and a sign welcoming you to the Plantation area.
Our house is a few miles down that turn off on the left side. We are the first house on the left after the next (loud) imbedded multi-rod speed bump. There are large white and yellow gates marking the entrance. The map below does not show the peninsula well, but Placencia Village is marked (it is on the southern tip of the peninsula), and our house is at the northern part of peninsula.
